I designed a softbox for Ellar (ellargrids.com). A softbox diffuses the light that comes from a light source. Ellar is a company that produces accessories for the Astera Light tubes, the industry standard for film set lighting. My task was to design a soft box fitting that could be attached to the existing Ellar mounting system.
Design requirements: Fit to Ellar mount, maximum 3 parts, auto tensioning of softbox fabric.
My starting point was to examine the stretch in the softbox fabric. I wanted to design a product without the need to manually feed this fabric in some kind of holders. It should be a system that can be unboxed and put on in a continuous movement without effort. I then designed the part that holds the softbox fabric to be slightly stretched and put over the existing mounts. And by doing this, eliminating the need to insert or take out the fabric from the accessory.
Used techniques: Iterating in Onshape and rapid prototyping by 3D printing.
