Redesigning a Multifunctional Business Gift
Tolhuijs Design
In the Netherlands, it is a cherished tradition for employers to present their staff with Christmas gifts before the holidays. Tolhuijs Design was honored to design and produce a meaningful gift for the 16,000 employees of the Dutch Custodial Institutions Agency (DJI).
The project began with an innovative concept crafted by Tolhuijs—a multifunctional product that serves as a barbecue, fire bin, planter, and composter all in one. The challenge was to ensure it could be produced by inmates in prison workshops, limiting production methods while adhering to a strict cost price. Beyond these constraints, the design required further refinement and optimisation for production.

Phase I: Research
The initial phase focused on thoroughly analysing the four functionalities of the product, followed by defining a clear program of requirements.
A form study was conducted through sketches and paper/cardboard prototypes, aiming to develop a shape that was easy to manufacture, transport, and assemble.
Material research and testing followed, exploring various iterations of component connections using permanent and semi-permanent fastening methods such as spot welding and bolts.
Finally, all insights from the research phase were consolidated into three distinct concepts. A structured selection process led to the final concept choice.

Phase II: Development
Steel prototypes were created to test strength, durability, and materials, ensuring quality and feasibility.
Technical drawings, manuals, and production planning were developed, including a detailed bill of materials and the selection of optimal fastening methods.
In the final stage, the design was refined, and packaging and user manuals were created to complete the product.
A year later, the finished product was successfully manufactured and gifted to DJI employees—offering them a sustainable, multifunctional gift crafted with thoughtful design and purpose.
